Lesson Plans

Work Hours

Here is a short example of my lesson plans for a high school computer applications class. This starts at the first day of school, and progresses through the first major project.

First Day:

Prerequisites:

  • Class Schedule
  • Sign for door
  • Class Roll Sheet
  • Name Cards (seating chart)
  • Computers Set Up
  • Team Building Exercise

Objective 1: Get the correct students into the classroom.

Method: I place a sign on the door stating the class, my name, etc. I introduce myself as the students come in the door.

Objective 2: Get the students into their correct seats.

Method: Every monitor has a name-tag with the student’s full name on it. These are brightly colored paper and face the door to the class.

Objective 3: I get to know my students.

Method: As I greet students at the door, I get as many names as I can. As I talk to students, I get the names of every student, and try to remember them.

Objective 4: Because my class emphasizes teamwork, students must learn early on how to work together.

Objective 5: Some students are afraid to touch computers. This must be overcome.

Objective 6: In my class, I encourage the best performing students to help the others out.

Method: We will complete a team-building exercise. Students all have some information on their desktops. Each student also has a question. Students must exchange information and work as a team to complete their tasks.

Every Day: As the students come in the door, greet them by name. Introduce myself. Smile and shake hands, when the students are lightly spaced, and do not have their hands full.

Second Day:

Prerequisites: Syllabus

Last time we got to know each other.

This time we will go over some class policies.

Objective: Each student will be knowledgeable concerning classroom policies.

  1. Seating Chart used, for everything
  2. Attendance required
  3. Assignments can be TEAM or INDIVIDUAL. Know the difference.
  4. Teams are rows of computers.
  5. Grading
    1. Homework (completion)
    2. Individual Quizzes
    3. Team Major Projects
  6. Projector (if applicable)
  7.

Next time - we start working on computers.

One the way out - Hand Out Syllabus

Third Day:

Pre-requisite: Class Web Page up, with:

  • Calendar
  • Contact Information
  • Syllabus
  • Computer Lab Info
  • Homework #1 assignment
  • Homework #1 CGI
  • Late homework policy

Last Time, we covered class policies, and everyone received a syllabus.

Today, we start working on computers. We will learn something about the Internet, and the World Wide Web.

Objective: Every student demonstrates access a computer outside of class.

Method:

How many people have computers at home?

How many have Internet access at home?

How many people have XYZ software that we are using? (The school usually picks the software)

List computer lab information on the board.

Introduce the Class Web Page.

Assignment: To look up the class web page, enter your name in a form, and print out the result. (It spits back a page that says “John Doe is smart.” In an unusual font.

NOBODY GETS IN THE DOOR TOMORROW WITHOUT A HOMEWORK.

(Note: I do this, not to be mean, but because most students who do not turn in homework are lazy. If they have to do more work to avoid homework, then they will usually do the homework).

On the way out - Handout with homework on one side, and information about computer labs, and the class web page on the other side.

Day Four:

Prerequisites:

  • No-homework slip – Please fill in the blanks: I _<John Doe>_ did not bring a completed _<Homework #1>_ to class today. The reason was _<My dog ate it>_. I will (please circle one) a: bring it tomorrow for a maximum grade of an 80%; b. not bring it tomorrow, and earn a zero
  • Class Web Site updated with

As I greet students coming in the door, I take their home works from them. Nobody gets in without a homework. I have “no homework slips” ready.
